In the basement of Lamont Library, at the end of a corridor of shelves stacked with boxed cartridges of microfilm and bound volumes of government documents, is a small room enclosed by an industrial security cage.
In a surprise announcement during a Houghton staff meeting on January 19, Heather Cole and Emilie Hardman were presented with the 2016 Carol Ishimoto Award for Distinguished Service by Sarah E. Thomas.

On Friday, November 4, 2016, around 566 family members of students in the Class of 2020 connected with Harvard Library as part of Freshman Family Weekend, meeting library staff and exploring library resources at Lamont Library, Harvard University Archives, Widener Library, and Houghton Library. Weekend participants also visited the FAS/HCL libraries throughout the weekend.
On October 26, 2016, colleagues from across Harvard University came together in the Widener Rotunda to celebrate as the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works presented Harvard Library, Harvard Art Museums, and the Peabody Museum with the Ross Merrill Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections.
